Principal's Message

Ed Downs Learning Community,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  We have so many exciting initiatives to implement into our curriculum this year.  As members of the Ed Downs Team, we will ensure that our students continue receiving the best education possible.

We would like to start off by showcasing our new academy. Soon you will hear from your son/daughter saying they are visiting our dance studio, drama room, and fine arts building at least once a week.  Our initiative this year is to have two lessons per grading period that will focus on the arts such as: art, music, dance, drama, and video production in Reading or Math subjects.  These additions are only and enhancement or enrichment.  All core subjects and TEKS will be covered throughout the year.  I strongly believe that by supplementing our curriculum with the arts we are not only providing a strong foundation but also giving each student the ability to express their individuality as well.

Our campus and district will continue to be part of the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE).  Campuses will have two different cohorts.  Cohort 1 is for teachers that participated last year, and Cohort 2 is for teachers that will begin with the professional training provided by our coach, Mark White this year.  The focus for our campus is to continue integrating rigor and relevance in our daily instruction.  Because technology continues to play a huge role in education, we are ensuring that we are providing all the components required of a 21st century education for your son or daughter.

The Texas Education Agency announced the accountability ratings once again on August 14, 2019. We are so excited and proud to say that Ed Downs received six out of six distinctions.  Because of this, our school ranks in the elite top 5% of elementary campuses in the state.   We received distinctions in ELA/Reading, Mathematics, Science, Comparative Academic Growth, Comparative Closing the Gaps, and Post-Secondary Readiness. The school was awarded a letter grade of an “A.”  With our goal of last year being met. Our goal for next year is to continue to see growth in all areas.

Your support is what has made all of this possible.  We need to have your son/daughter here daily.  Punctuality is also very important since our teachers begin instruction immediately following the Pledge of Allegiance  @7:45 A.M.  We would also like to encourage you to be a part of our great parent volunteer program led by Mrs. Francis Garcia and our Parent Teacher Organization as well. I know that if we work together our school will continue to reflect the “Gold Standard” in all areas of public education!

We will continue to keep you informed by posting all our events via social media and our campus website.  School schedules, student expectations regarding attendance and behavior, policy and procedures will be available via our school website or in our school office.  Once again my door will always be open if you have any questions or concerns that need to be addressed.  You may reach me at (956) 361-6720 or via email  I thank you in advance for entrusting us with the privilege of educating your son or daughter.
